Computer vision is the ability of machines to "see" and understand the visual world. The program analyzes pixels in an image or video to recognize objects, faces, manufacturing defects, or text in a scanned document.

What is Computer Vision?

For a computer, a picture is just a matrix of numbers (pixel colors). Computer Vision looks for patterns in these numbers to identify shapes and objects.

Main tasks: • Classification - what is in the photo? (is it a cat or a dog?) • Object detection - where are the cars in the photo? • Segmentation - separating the object from the background (like blurring the background in Zoom) • Face recognition - FaceID in the smartphone • OCR - converting text from a picture into a digital format

This technology is the basis of self-driving cars, medical diagnostics and quality control automation.

How does computer vision work?

A model (usually a convolutional neural network, CNN) is trained on thousands of labeled images. She learns to recognize edges and lines first, then shapes, and finally - whole objects.
